4. Macro & Economic Factors Impacting the Market

  • Rupee Gains Against USD: The Indian rupee appreciated by 0.088% to settle at 85.5455 against the U.S. dollar.

  • Volatility Index: India VIX is down 2.51%, settling at 15.47.

  • Crude Oil Prices: Brent crude prices were around $66 per barrel, influenced by global trade tensions and supply concerns.

5. Market Sentiment & Key Triggers

  1. IT Sector Weakness: Indian IT stocks faced pressure as Wipro's shares fell 4.34% following a disappointing Q4 revenue report. Infosys also declined initially but gained upward momentum to close 0.45% up from its previous price ahead of its earnings report.

  2. Financial Sector Gains: Despite IT sector pressures, financial stocks helped recover market losses. ICICI Bank gained 3.71%, and HDFC Bank gained 1.53%.

  3. SEBI's Stance on NSE IPO: SEBI is actively working to resolve issues delaying the National Stock Exchange's (NSE) IPO. The NSE first applied for IPO in 2016 but faced challenges due to allegations of providing unequal trading access to its members. SEBI Chairman Tuhin Kanta Pandey emphasised SEBI’s commitment to public interest over commercial gains.

  4. Corporate Earnings: Tata Elxsi Ltd. and HDFC Life Insurance Company are going to announce their Q4FY25 results, while people wait to see if a similar surge in the financials of HDFC Life Insurance can be seen as we saw in ICICI Prudential.

Conclusion & Investment Strategy

Despite mixed global cues and a sharp correction in IT stocks, Indian equity benchmarks showed resilience, buoyed by strong performance in the financial and infrastructure sectors. Volatility remained elevated due to Q4 earnings season and geopolitical uncertainties, but domestic sentiment held stable.

From Finology Research Desk:

"In volatile markets like today, consider adding quality large-cap financial stocks with strong fundamentals, especially those with stable asset quality. Additionally, use this earnings season to reassess your portfolio allocations, focusing on companies with pricing power and strong financials."
