Stock Market Today: Sensex Ends Flat, Nifty at 22,750 as Smallcaps Surge 2.69% (27 October 2026)

Last updated on 27 Oct 2026 Wraps up in 24 minutes Read by 1068

The stock market today, 27 October 2026, ended almost flat at the benchmark level, but the broader market told a very different story. The BSE Sensex slipped just 8.08 points, or 0.01%, to 73,598.67, while the Nifty 50 declined 3.45 points, or 0.02%, to 22,749.75. Bank Nifty was noticeably weaker, falling 391.80 points, or 0.72%, to 53,974.90.

Beneath the muted headline indices, buying remained strong in smaller companies and selected sectors. The Nifty Smallcap 100 surged 2.69%, the Nifty Midcap 100 gained 1%, and media, realty, pharma, defence and auto stocks ended higher. Banking, financial services, NBFC and IT stocks remained under pressure.

Crude oil near $115 per barrel, the upcoming US Federal Reserve policy decision, Q2 FY27 earnings, defence procurement developments and an active IPO calendar remained important triggers for investors.

Stock Market Today: Sensex, Nifty 50 and Bank Nifty Closing Levels

Indian equities moved in a narrow range at the headline level after Monday's recovery. Selling in banking and IT heavyweights offset strength in consumer, auto and several broader-market stocks.

Index 27 October close Change
BSE Sensex 73,598.67 -8.08 (-0.01%)
Nifty 50 22,749.75 -3.45 (-0.02%)
Bank Nifty 53,974.90 -391.80 (-0.72%)

The most important takeaway from the session is that the almost unchanged Sensex and Nifty did not represent the market as a whole. Mid-cap and particularly small-cap stocks recorded substantially stronger gains.

Investors can track benchmark indices, sector performance, top gainers, losers and active stocks through the Stock Market Dashboard.

Why Did the Stock Market Remain Flat Today?

The Indian stock market remained volatile as positive stock-specific and broader-market sentiment was offset by pressure on heavyweight banking and technology companies.

Banking stocks weighed on the benchmarks

Bank Nifty fell 0.72%, with State Bank of India, Axis Bank, ICICI Bank, AU Small Finance Bank and IndusInd Bank among the weaker banking stocks.

The decline mattered for the headline market because major banks have a significant influence on benchmark index movements.

IT stocks remained under pressure

The Nifty IT index declined 0.26%, while TCS fell 1.50% to Rs 2,496.90. Weakness in technology stocks added to pressure from financials.

Crude oil remained elevated

Brent crude traded near $115 per barrel during the session. Sustained high crude prices keep India's inflation outlook, import bill, rupee movement and input costs for oil-sensitive businesses in focus.

The impact is not uniform across sectors. Higher crude can create cost pressure for industries such as aviation, paints and chemicals, while the implications for energy companies depend on refining economics, product prices and individual business models.

Investors awaited the US Federal Reserve decision

The Federal Reserve's October monetary policy announcement is scheduled for 28 October 2026.

Investors are monitoring the decision and accompanying commentary because changes in US interest-rate expectations can influence Treasury yields, the dollar, emerging-market capital flows and equity valuations.

Broader markets attracted buying

While the Nifty 50 fell 0.02%, the Nifty Midcap 100 gained 1% and the Nifty Smallcap 100 rose 2.69%.

This divergence was one of the session's most important trends and indicated substantially stronger participation outside the largest index constituents.

Q2 FY27 earnings drove stock-specific action

Tata Consumer Products, Sona BLW Precision Forgings, Paytm, REC and Cipla were among the companies attracting attention following quarterly earnings announcements.

Nifty 50 Today: Top Gainers and Losers

The Nifty 50 ended marginally lower, but individual constituent movements were considerably larger than the index change.

Tata Consumer Products was the strongest Nifty performer following its Q2 FY27 results.

Major Stock Market News and Q2 FY27 Results

Tata Consumer Products Q2 FY27: Shares Gain 6.78%

India branded underlying volume +11%
Growth businesses revenue +40%

Growth businesses reached 38% of the company's India branded business. Tata Sampann revenue increased 57%, while salt revenue grew 15%.

The company reported its sixth consecutive profitable quarter.

Merchant gross merchandise value increased 26% to approximately Rs 7.1 lakh crore, supported by merchant payments and financial-services distribution.

Investors should track the sustainability of payment margins, merchant monetisation and the durability of profitability without dependence on one-off income.

Interim dividend Rs 3.50 per share
Record date 30 October 2026

Cipla Q2 FY27: Net Profit Declines 35%

Cipla announced its September-quarter results on 27 October.

Consolidated net profit declined approximately 35% year on year to Rs 877.54 crore, while revenue from products fell around 1.06% to Rs 7,368.15 crore.

Its One-India business, however, grew approximately 12% to Rs 3,516 crore. The reported EBITDA margin improved sequentially to 18.7%.

Cipla continues to focus on its domestic branded business and North American product pipeline.

The domestic business remained comparatively resilient, but investors should monitor overall profitability, US product launches, North American revenue and further margin recovery.

Other Q2 FY27 Results in Focus

Several other companies remained in focus following earnings announcements.

Company Q2 FY27 update
Nazara Technologies Revenue +52.6% to Rs 803.2 crore; PAT Rs 35.36 crore

Defence Acquisition Council Approves Rs 2.12 Lakh Crore Proposals

India's Defence Acquisition Council approved in-principle capital acquisition proposals worth approximately Rs 2.12 lakh crore on 26 October.

The proposed acquisitions cover equipment including helicopters, artillery, high-mobility vehicles, unmanned aerial systems, counter-drone systems, air-defence equipment, naval platforms and surveillance systems.

Approximately 82% of the proposed procurement value is intended for Indian industry.

Nifty India Defence gained 1.82% on 27 October.

However, investors should distinguish between procurement approvals and actual company orders. Acceptance of Necessity approval does not represent a confirmed purchase order for a particular listed defence company.

Tendering, contract awards, execution schedules and eventual revenue recognition remain the more important company-level factors.

Sigma Advanced Systems Reports Rs 973 Crore NATO Customer Order

Sigma Advanced Systems reportedly secured an order worth Rs 973 crore from a NATO customer for manufacturing and supplying Base Bleed units used in 155 mm artillery ammunition.

The reported execution period is approximately 12 months.

Investors should monitor the related exchange disclosure, delivery milestones and the eventual contribution to revenue and profitability.

Global Cues: Federal Reserve and Crude Oil in Focus

Domestic earnings remain important, but global conditions could influence near-term sentiment.

Federal Reserve policy decision

The US Federal Reserve is scheduled to announce its October policy decision on 28 October 2026.

Investors will closely monitor both the interest-rate decision and commentary on inflation, economic growth and the future path of monetary policy.

Changes in expectations could influence US Treasury yields, the dollar, emerging-market capital flows and Indian equity valuations.

Brent crude near $115 per barrel

High crude oil prices remain a significant macroeconomic variable for India.

Sustained elevated oil prices can influence:

  • India's import bill and inflation.
  • The rupee and current-account position.
  • Raw-material costs for oil-sensitive industries.
  • Aviation, paints and chemical companies.
  • Refining economics and energy-sector profitability.

The effect varies by company and sector, so higher oil prices should not be treated as universally positive or negative for energy-related businesses.

What Should Investors Watch Next?

After a session in which benchmark indices remained flat but small-cap and sectoral stocks rallied, several indicators could determine the next market move.

  • Nifty 50: Whether the index can establish a stronger move after closing at 22,749.75.
  • Sensex: Whether pressure from banking and other heavyweight constituents begins to ease.
  • Bank Nifty: Whether the index can recover after its 0.72% decline.
  • Mid- and small-caps: Whether the significant outperformance of the broader market remains sustainable.
  • Pharma and realty: Whether recent sectoral momentum continues.
  • Q2 FY27 earnings: Results from L&T, Maruti Suzuki, Bajaj Auto, SBI Life and other major companies.
  • Defence stocks: Actual tendering and contract awards following the Defence Acquisition Council approvals.
  • IPO listings: Jio Platforms and Paras Healthcare are scheduled to list on 28 October.
  • Ongoing IPOs: Final demand for EAAA India Alternatives, BLS Polymers and SFC Environmental Technologies.
  • Institutional flows: Whether foreign institutional selling continues and whether domestic buying remains supportive.
  • Global cues: The Federal Reserve decision, crude oil prices, bond yields and geopolitical developments.
